Tutor Spotlight: Kadence (M.S. Mathematics, Eastern Michigan University)

Kadence is a dedicated tutor with a deep love for mathematics and helping students succeed. Currently pursuing Masters of Science in Mathematics at Eastern Michigan University, Kadence has been tutoring students of all levels, from elementary to college, for several years. Her passion for both math and teaching shines through in her thoughtful, personalized tutoring style that makes challenging topics easier to understand.

A Tutoring Style That Encourages Learning and Growth

Kadence’s tutoring approach is all about guiding students to find the answers on their own, rather than simply giving them the solution. She likes to ask leading questions to help students think critically and gain confidence in their problem-solving abilities. Kadence walks students through each step of a problem and then asks them to explain the next one, ensuring they truly understand the process. This interactive method helps students not only grasp the material but also develop independence in their learning.

What makes Kadence’s tutoring even more effective is her ability to adapt to the student’s learning style. She is committed to using the methods taught by the student’s teacher but is also open to introducing alternate strategies when needed. This flexibility ensures that every student can find an approach that makes sense to them, reinforcing Kadence's belief that not everyone learns the same way.

Real-World Experience in Research

Kadence has had the opportunity to apply her love of math to real-world research projects. At Grand Valley, she participated in an independent study where she and a group of students worked on finding patterns within the game Minesweeper. Their findings led to the development of equations, which they proudly presented during the university’s Student Scholars Day. This research experience has strengthened Kadence's problem-solving skills and ability to break down complex concepts, which she now brings into her tutoring sessions.

In addition to her academic research, Kadence also worked with an orthopedic surgeon in Detroit in 2019. She helped test and evaluate the accuracy of the Bonesetter app, a tool designed to assist medical students in learning about orthopedic procedures. Her contributions to the project, which included analyzing data and writing a paper, resulted in the research being published. These hands-on experiences have equipped Kadence with a well-rounded understanding of how mathematics applies to various fields, making her a versatile and knowledgeable tutor.

Balancing Passion for Math and Cheerleading

Outside of academics, Kadence is equally passionate about cheerleading. She was a cheerleader in high school and has continued to share her love for the sport by coaching young cheerleaders, including her three younger sisters. Kadence also provides private lessons for tumbling, and she finds immense joy in helping students achieve new skills. The excitement her students feel when they master something new is what drives her, both in cheerleading and in tutoring.

Kadence sees a strong parallel between her work in cheerleading and tutoring—both allow her to watch students grow and improve, gaining confidence in themselves. The satisfaction of helping students overcome challenges, whether in cheerleading or math, is what motivates her to keep teaching.

A Wide Range of Tutoring Experience

Kadence’s tutoring journey began long before she started working at Grand Valley’s mathematics and statistics drop-in tutoring center in 2023. Prior to that, she tutored elementary and middle school students, developing the patience and adaptability needed to teach younger learners. Now, at the GVSU tutoring center, Kadence collaborates with other tutors to assist college students in higher-level math and statistics courses, expanding her expertise and refining her tutoring methods.

Her experience across various educational levels has given her a unique perspective on how to engage students of all ages and skill levels. Whether she’s working with younger children on foundational math skills or helping college students navigate complex statistics problems, Kadence is committed to making math accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone.

Kadence’s passion for both mathematics and helping others succeed makes her an outstanding tutor. Her thoughtful, adaptive tutoring style empowers students to take control of their learning while ensuring they feel supported every step of the way. With her extensive experience, research background, and love for teaching, Kadence is dedicated to helping students of all levels excel in their studies. Whether you’re struggling with basic math or advanced statistics, Kadence is ready to guide you to success with patience, encouragement, and a personalized approach that works for you.
